About Founder’s Float
Timothy Johnson’s Founders Float is a Canoe and Kayak Event on the beautiful Rock River in Jefferson County. A 10 mile event will be held for more experienced paddlers, and a 2 mile event for beginners and families. We welcome all types of paddlers: canoes, kayaks, stand up paddleboards, whatever you paddle, we’d love to have you join us!
The 10 mile event will follow the same stretch of the Rock River that Timothy Johnson, our village’s founder, famously traveled on his way south from Watertown to Johnson Creek. This beautiful segment you’ll paddle during our event is also part of the Rock River National Water Trail.
Proceeds from the 2020 Founders Float will contribute to ongoing projects at the Johnson Creek Historical Society Museum.
10 Mile Paddle
The 10 mile, Founders Float, course is a point to point paddle from Cappie’s Landing in Watertown (N8625 Jefferson Rd., Watertown, WI) to Rock River Park in Johnson Creek (W5281 Hwy B Johnson Creek, WI). We recommend that you are an experienced paddler to participate in this distance (i.e. this is not your first time on the water).
The 10 mile Founders Float will begin at Cappie’s Landing in Watertown. We will hold a mass start at 9:30 am. However, participants wishing to begin earlier may do so. There will be no ‘Day of Registration’ for the 10 mile event. The 10-mile is a pre-register only event. The 10 mile event will be capped at 100 registrants. Paddlers may participate solo or tandem, but each participant must register separately.
Parking will not be permitted at Cappie’s Landing. Paddlers driving themselves will be able to drop off their boat in our secure boat coral at Cappie’s Landing beginning at 7:30 am the morning of the event. Parking will be at the Johnson Creek High School (455 Aztalan St., Johnson Creek). After dropping off your boat, you will be instructed to drive your vehicle to JCHS and ride our Shuttle back to Cappie’s Landing. Shuttles will be running from 7:30 am – 9:00 am. The last shuttle will leave JCHS at 9am. Please plan ahead for this.
10 mile paddlers may also be dropped off at Cappie’s Landing with their boat by a separate driver. Please keep in mind that parking at Cappie’s Landing is limited if your driver would like to stay to watch you take off.
2 Mile Paddle
The 2 Mile distance will be an out and back paddle beginning at Rock River Park in Johnson Creek, heading North and then returning to the park. This is a fun event and is meant to accommodate paddlers of all ability levels. If you are interested in using a Stand Up Paddleboard to participate, we encourage you sign up for the 2 mile event.
The 2 Mile paddle will start and finish at Rock River Park in Johnson Creek. Check-in for pre-registered paddlers and day of registration for this event will take place at Johnson Creek High School. Check-in and day-of registration for the 2 Mile paddle will begin at 10am. If our event capacity is reached before the day of the event, there will then be no ‘Day of’ registration.
Once checked in we will instruct you on how to transfer your boat from JCHS to Rock River Park. There will be no boat drop off or vehicle parking allowed at Rock River Park. Please note that you may register ‘day of’ for the 2 mile, however, day of registrants will not receive an event t-shirt. Only Registrants signed up prior to the online registration cut-off will receive a t-shirt.
*IMPORTANT INFO: The 2020 Events will be capped at a combined total of 100 participants. Once capacity is reached, registration will close.
